Do Robots Really Deserve Civil Rights?

Nearly every work of science fiction that’s deals with robots and artificial intelligence has asked the question: When are machine and human indistinguishable, and when should we start treating thinking computers as living, intelligent beings asking to be humans? However, we who live in the present must ask: Are such concerns even relevant? And why would an AI need to be protected by civil rights to begin with?
